The Traveler

I watch them come and go
The floor is hard
No room to move.
I wait for the gate to open.
I wait for the angels to come.
I wait for the boy from before.
I wait
I watch
I wait
I watch.
I see other boys and men and women come and go.
I see other dogs like me come and go.
Some through the outside door
Some not.
A lady gives me a pat and a milkbone and whispers to me.
I wait for the boy from before.
I wait.
I watch.
One day the gate slides open
A man stands before me
The milkbone lady at his side
“Cmon boy, let’s go.”
I know it’s my time.
The man slips something around my neck and I move down the hall.
Glad my time is done.
Glad the angels have come
To take me to the boy from before.
But it’s not the inside door.
Suddenly I see the sun shining
And the man leads me to a van
There’s a bed
And a crate
And another dog
We ride and we ride and we ride
We watch
We wait
I wait for the boy from before
One day the sun rises and the van stops
A lady appears at the door
Her face is covered
She calls me Jake.
My name is Jake.
Like the boy from before.
She puts her arms around me
She smells new and different
I ask her with my eyes
About the boy from before.
The lady gives me water
She gives me food
I eat for days
I eat everything.
She lets me run.
I think she’s my angel.
The lady walks me to another car
I sit back
It’s only polite.
A boy and a man and a woman
Come out of the car
A boy.
He’s not the boy from before.
But he smells like him.
His name is Alex.
And he’s mine.
The lady hugs me
One last time.
She is crying.
I am crying.
I have a boy.
I’m home now.
I have a bed.
I have a boy.
I have an angel named Rose.
And my name
Is Jake.

Beautiful, Thank You Rose-Anne 🙂 for making a real difference in the lives of animals!!!
