I love a good melancholic film. It requires really good writing, direction and honest portrayal of its characters. I saw three such films recently.
Polytechnique is a recounting of the horrific massacre at the U. of Montréal in 1989. I was at the university for a computer club meetup just the week before. The film does a very good job treating the subject. It reminded me of Shindler’s List in terms of tone.
Gerry – portraying the rise of Quebec’s Gerry Boulet (he passed away) who led the first band (Offenbach) from the province to headline the Montréal Forum. Wonderful depiction of the plight of these working class quebecois – i’ve never seen so many stubbies and cigarettes being consumed in a film – at all hours of the day.
And finally One Hour Photo starring Robin Williams. Williams does a great job as the lead. The viewer cannot help but be sympathetic to this potentially deranged monster.
I’ve decided to stop putting ratings on films as i only see critically acclaimed films.
