Chris Bowen, Minister for Climate Change and Energy, said (PDF) to Parliament, “today is a good day for our parliament and our country, and we’re going to need many more of them.” Bowen believes the legislation will help businesses, saying, “[l]egislating these [emissions] targets gives certainty to investors and participants in the energy market and will help stabilize our energy system.” Bowen also hopes an annual climate statement to parliament will help improve accountability and transparency for the Australian people. “The passage of the climate change legislation sends a message to the world that Australia is serious about driving down emissions, and serious about reaping the economic opportunities from affordable renewable energy,” added Bowen.
